Hazmat Load Segregation Checker

Pick two or more hazard classes/divisions being loaded on the same transport vehicle — this checks every pair against the 49 CFR § 177.848 segregation table and tells you what's forbidden, what needs separation, and what's clear.

Hazard classes in the load

Result

Add at least two hazard classes above to check segregation.
XForbidden — may not be loaded/transported/stored together OSeparate — OK only if packages can't commingle if leakage occurs —No restriction under this table *Class 1 — governed by compatibility-group table

Compatibility heatmap — your load

Every pair of hazard classes you've added above, plotted as a co-load matrix. Green = clear, amber = separate required, red = forbidden — driven live by the same § 177.848 table used for the results above.

Add two or more hazard classes to render the compatibility heatmap.

Class 1 (explosive) compatibility-group table — § 177.848(f)

When two or more Class 1 items with different compatibility groups are loaded together, this table governs instead of the class-level table above.

Reading the numbers: "1" = Group L explosives only travel with an identical explosive. "2" = any combination of C/D/E is treated as Group E. "3" = any combination of C/D/E with N is treated as Group D. "4" = see § 177.835(g) for detonators. "5" = Division 1.4S fireworks may not load with Division 1.1/1.2. "6" = Group G articles (excluding fireworks / special-handling items) may load with C/D/E articles if explosive substances aren't in the same vehicle.
Table notes (§ 177.848(e)): Blank = no restriction. "X" = may not be loaded, transported, or stored together in the same transport vehicle or storage facility. "O" = may not be together unless separated so that leakage under normal transport conditions could not commingle the materials. "*" = governed by the Class 1 compatibility table. "A" (note column) = notwithstanding "X," ammonium nitrate (UN1942) / ammonium nitrate fertilizer may load with Division 1.1 or 1.5, unless prohibited by § 177.835(c). Subsidiary hazard labels require the more restrictive segregation when applicable (§ 177.848(e)(6)).

How this tool works

Hazmat Load Segregation Checker runs entirely in your browser. Inputs are evaluated with rules and constants taken from 49 CFR § 177.848 (Hazmat & dangerous goods). Nothing is uploaded to a server for the calculation itself.
